Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
The project site "Wuhua Industrial Zone" is managed by the county government and is located in a mountainous area in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. Factories in the zone are situated along the Luoliaokeng Creek, with drainage systems flowing into the creek and eventually reaching the Touqian River, the source of drinking water for the people of Hsinchu. In response to growing concerns about water source cleanliness, the industrial zone is working towards sustainability and environmental protection. The project, led by the "Institute of Environmental Analysis and Environmental Science, National Tsing Hua University," aims to address water issues in the Touqian River Basin and promote greening transformation in local old industrial zones. The project focuses on "Environmental Monitoring" through assessing the health of the river and "Consensus Building" to foster collaboration among stakeholders for protecting the environment. The ultimate goal is to minimize environmental damage from human activities through improvements like establishing real-time monitoring data.
Results/Contributions

The project site "Wuhua Industrial Zone" is located in the mountainous area between Wulong Village and Hualong Village in Qionglin Township, Hsinchu County. It is an industrial zone managed by the county government, with factories constructed along the Luoliaokeng Creek. The drainage systems of each factory area flow into the creek, which eventually joins the Touqian River. The water is then collected for daily use through the Long'en Weir intake and Nayatake intake, becoming the source of drinking water for the people of Hsinchu. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness among citizens about the cleanliness of their drinking water sources, putting significant pressure on the Wuhua Industrial Zone. The zone itself aims to transition towards sustainability by responding to local expectations of environmental protection and social responsibility for industrial zones. The team from the "Institute of Environmental Analysis and Environmental Science, National Tsing Hua University" hopes to use their research expertise to address environmental water issues in the Touqian River Basin and assist in promoting the greening transformation of local old industrial zones, significantly improving the existing conditions. The project has two main focuses: "Environmental Monitoring" and "Consensus Building." "Environmental Monitoring" involves assessing the environmental health of the Touqian River, such as water and sediment analysis, investigating stream waste, and promoting Tsing Hua University's adoption of the Touqian River and conducting interviews with relevant stakeholders. "Consensus Building" includes preparing for an environmental sustainability forum and conducting a watershed vision workshop to protect our precious environment through the collective efforts of various sectors. Subsequent concrete improvements, such as establishing real-time monitoring data to address environmental issues, aim to minimize the environmental damage caused by human activities.
