Seminar on Indigenous Traditional Hand-Tap Tattooing
Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
This project aims to promote traditional indigenous culture by leading faculty and students through an in-depth exploration of the historical context, totemic symbolism, and strict social protocols of hand-tap tattooing through specialized lectures and live demonstrations. This activity is not merely a display of craftsmanship, but a profound dialogue regarding ethnic identity and cultural preservation, dedicated to building an indigenous-friendly campus and enhancing the effectiveness of indigenous education for all.
Results/Contributions
This lecture invites Cudjuy Patjidres, a traditional Paiwan hand-tap tattoo artist, to share and explain the historical background, symbolic meanings, and traditional protocols of tattoo culture, followed by a live demonstration and hands-on experience. Although not all students could participate in the actual tattooing process, observing the artist’s techniques and listening to the explanations firsthand allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural values and ethnic significance carried by traditional hand-tap tattooing.
