This project aims to explore how modernist music in Taiwan was developed within the context of the international Cold War ideology. Using Hsu Tsang-houei as an example, this study will discuss the "modern music" image he formed in Taiwan between the 1950s and 1973, and its connection to his interactions with Japan and the United States through specific events and reports. The primary methods of this research include oral history and archival research. The study aims to provide another viewpoint on Taiwan's interaction with the international community during the Cold War era from a music perspective. Past studies on modernist music in Taiwan have not considered the external influences of the Cold War, and likewise, research on the Cold War has not addressed the issue of modernist music in Taiwan. The goal of this research is to combine these two existing research fields through the example of Hsu Tsang-houei and establish a starting point for discussing East Asian music interactions from a Cold War perspective.
