Camp Dates: August 12 (Monday) - August 16 (Friday)
Activity Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Activity Location: Tuo Qian Creek Basin - Jiu Gang Island
Target Participants: Priority registration for students of Nan Liao Elementary School and general public
Number of Participants: 20 (1 educator per 5 children)
The camp will be held on "Jiu Gang Island," which is an island in the middle of Tuo Qian Creek. Most people have crossed this island via the western coastal highway without realizing that there is a saltwater-freshwater boundary island here. The organizing team invites children to live together on this island for five days, immersing themselves in different cultural themes, including crossing Tuo Qian Creek, making pickled mackerel for overnight drying, learning eel culture techniques, and exploring the local temple, Fu Mei Temple.
Activity Record:
On the last day of the "Water! Liver Living Camp," we designed a teaching activity where we collected ocean waste from the beach to create art. Simply creating artworks may not be very motivating for children, so we thought about organizing a competition. However, competitions come with wins and losses; sometimes having wins and losses is fun, but this time, we just wanted to have fun and increase the children's motivation to participate. We did not want the children to feel frustrated or uncomfortable due to comparisons. Is it okay if there are no losers, and can there be subtle competition rules even if someone wins?
Ocean waste, waste, trash. Why not hold a "Little Waste Big Contest"? We invited the children to create using ocean waste and then asked them to vote on the "degree of waste" of each artwork. Based on the voting results, each piece would be categorized into three levels: Who can be more wasteful than me, Just the right amount of waste, and Not as wasteful as you.
"What level do you want your work to achieve?" I encouraged the children to try to create the artwork they wanted to pursue. Some children showed me their awards, while others happily said, "I'm so wasteful," and some joyfully declared, "I'm not wasteful at all." "There is profit in possession, there is use in absence." In this competition, regardless of the "results" obtained, they all represent a personal achievement.
