Abstract/Objectives
This course is titled "The Writing and Practice of Public History". The main origin of this course is the emergence of the topic of "Public History" since 2003, and the rich discussions in the academic circles, such as Liangkai Zhou and Hongyi Zhang, who pointed out that "Public History" is an academic method of reading and analysing history, and that its significance lies in the study and practice of three orientations of historiography: history by the public(s), history of the public(s), and history for the public(s). history by the public(s), history of the public(s), and history for the public(s).
The programme is divided into two phases, namely, training in the fundamentals of public history and practice in the translation of essays. In the first phase, students will be trained to build a foundation in public history through workshops, and to deepen their historical understanding and thinking through the reading of essays, followed by writing exercises. Afterwards, learners will independently choose the essays they are interested in reading and translating. In the course of the programme, book clubs and book discussions are expected to be held regularly, where learners will share with each other their current progress, interesting discoveries, points or issues worth pondering, as well as difficulties they have encountered, etc. At the end of the course, the results will be submitted to Hsinchu Literature, a publication of the Hsinchu County Government's Department of Cultural Affairs.
