Abstract/Objectives
Health condition has been an issue that people will pay more attention to when their age increased. The population ageing in Taiwan is growing rapidly, which let us focus academic research on how to slow down the speed of population ageing and make a successful ageing society. The purpose of this study was to examine the elderly’s functional fitness after six weeks of Nordic walking training. Thirteen volunteers from one of the elderly community colleges in Hsinchu City participated in this research. The senior functional fitness included a total of seven tests, which were thirty seconds arm curl test, thirty seconds chair stand test, back scratch test, chair sit and reach test, two-minute step in place test, eight-foot up-and-go test, and one leg
stance test with eyes open. The research used the SPSS 18.0 statistical software, analyzed with Descriptive Statistics and Paired Sample T-test(α=.05). The results showed that a total of six tests had a significant impact(p<.05), which were thirty
seconds arm curl test, thirty seconds chair stand test, chair sit and reach test, two- minute step in place test, eight-foot up-and-go test, and one leg stance test with eyes open. However, on the other side, the back scratch test did not show a significant impact(p>.05). There were improvements in upper and lower body muscle strength, lower body flexibility, agility, and cardiopulmonary endurance. Only the upper body flexibility did not show any progress. The research showed a conclusion that Nordic walking training had positive impacts on the elderly’s upper and lower body muscle strength, lower body flexibility, agility, and cardiopulmonary endurance. Nordic walking was really an excellent exercise for the senior population. It could both enhance their physical ability and improve personal health promotion.
