Abstract/Objectives
The objective of this course is to familiarize undergraduate students with some modern topics in international trade and finance, connecting theory to empirical evidence and demonstrating the relevance of theory to real-world economic issues and policy questions. We discuss firms’ decisions in the global economy, which are about export decisions, outsourcing, and multinational Enterprises. The course also focuses on investigating the impacts of trade policy on welfare of consumers, producers and social welfare. In addition, we study the issues about international finance and monetary policy. Students are required to write an essay, make presentations and aggressively participate in class discussions.
Results/Contributions
We have great discussions about international economic issues. The students could share their opinions and have good collaboration while working on their projects. In their essays, they showed their abilities to summarize and analyze data, and they positively applied the theory studied to investigate the economic issues. The topics presented are various, such as “The impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on crude oil prices”, “The causes and effects of hyperinflation – cases studies of Zimbabwe and Venezuela ”, “ The pricing strategies in smartphone oligopoly market”, “The economic impact of hosting Olympics, and the estimated impacts of postponing Tokyo 2020 Olympics”, “The effects of US-China trade war on the US automobile industry”, etc.
