Abstract/Objectives
This course aimed to provide an introduction to special education and students with various special needs. The first set of sessions provides the background and framework for special education and disability research. The second sessions focus on characteristics of students with various types of disabilities. We also introduced the teaching strategies and principles of how to provide individualized education for students with disabilities.
Results/Contributions
After this course, students understood the terminology and fundamental concepts in special education, including but not limited to individualized education plan (IEP) and inclusive education. Students can identify the characteristics of children and youth with diverse special needs, the challenges that children and youth with disabilities encounter at school or in class, and their individualized learning needs. Students are also familiar with legislative mandates which promote inclusion, diversity, and nondiscrimination in the educational environment.
