Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
Human-driven destruction of the habitats leads us on the brink of a global biological disaster that can rival anything in evolutionary history. There are about 350,000 living plants on Earth, and it is estimated that 1/4 will extinct in 2050, and more than half might extinct by the end of this century if we do not take action now. Tropical plants are especially under enormous threat and extinct at an alarming rate. Dr. Cecilia Koo Botanic Conservation Center (KBCC), located in southern Taiwan, was established in 2007 to conserve the tropical and subtropical plants and sustain the richest biodiversity on Earth. It focuses on living plants’ ex situ preservation and cultivates 31,387 plants in 17 greenhouses with 35,240 square meters. The goal is to conserve over 40,000 kinds of plants before 2025. The National Tsing Hua University and National Museum of Natural Science have been working with KBCC closely from 2012 to 2017 on plant resources in the Solomon Islands with fruitful results. Starting from 2017 to 2020, with significant support from the Ministry of Science and Technology, these three organizations will work together again on plant resources in Vietnam.
Results/Contributions

1.The ‘Botanical inventory, research, and conservation of the flora of Lang Biang Plateau, Vietnam’ project is launched with an MOU signing between partners.

2.The ‘Pteridophyte Reproductive Biology: Multidisciplinary Approaches’ workshop was hosted at KBCC in association with the 7th Asian Symposium of Ferns and Lycophytes.

3.KBCC joined the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition, contributing 1000 species to exhibit on local and international plant conservation.

4.The ‘Taiwan Plant Conservation Symposium’ was co-organized by KBCC and BGCI and hosted at National Tsing Hua University.

5.KBCC joined the Education Bureau of the Taichung City Government to present threatened Taichung species, Clematis Sinensis var. tatushanensis, and promote environmental protection and plant conservation in the county to students and teachers.
