Results/Contributions
  • "In the true sense, a university is not defined by grand buildings, but by great masters." This famous saying by Tsing Hua University President Mei Yiqi highlights the tradition of producing outstanding masters in the history of Tsinghua. Among them, the "Four Great Masters" from the founding period of the National Institute of Chinese Studies hold a special position. This semester, the Tsinghua General Education People Series will focus on Chen Yin and Zhao Yuanren from the "Four Great Masters," tracing the brilliance of these intellectual masters who shaped the spirit of Tsinghua University and the traditional thoughts of modern disciplines.

Chen Yin (1890-1969) was a modern Chinese historian and classical literature researcher who was proficient in multiple languages. His academic philosophy was "independent spirit, free thought." He pioneered new paradigms in literary and historical studies by using academic methods that relied on poetry to prove history and history to interpret poetry.

Zhao Yuanren (1892-1982) was an internationally renowned linguist and musician who was fluent in eight languages and 33 Chinese dialects, earning him the title of "Father of Chinese Linguistics." He laid the foundation for modern Chinese linguistics through scientific methods, delving deep into studies of phonetics, word formation, grammar, pragmatics, symbols, dialectology, and integrating them into music compositions, turning poetry into songs that would resonate through the ages.

This lecture series will comprehensively explore the life stories of Chen Yin and Zhao Yuanren in the fields of history, literature, music, linguistics, and so on, elaborating on their achievements in various intellectual and academic pursuits.
