Abstract/Objectives
This course will be taught by archaeologists who will introduce the basic concepts of underwater archaeology and the preservation of underwater cultural heritage in Taiwan. Through engaging explanations and on-site visits to the frontlines of underwater archaeology, students will gain a clear and accessible understanding of fundamental concepts in a short period. By completing this course, students will acquire: 1. A basic understanding of underwater archaeology and underwater cultural heritage 2. Knowledge of the development of underwater archaeology 3. Methods for surveying, excavating, and preserving underwater cultural heritage 4. Familiarity with notable underwater cultural heritage sites and case studies in underwater archaeology 5. Insight into the relationship between underwater archaeology and maritime history 6. An understanding of the ethics and legal framework surrounding underwater cultural heritage
Results/Contributions

This course has three units, including the development of underwater archaeology in Taiwan and the preservation and maintenance of underwater cultural assets: Unit 1 "Historical Relics under the Great Sea Lane" is taught by Tsang Cheng-hwa. Through the course, students can have a preliminary understanding of the definition of underwater archaeology and the current development of underwater archaeology in Taiwan, and discuss the relationship between underwater archaeology and the masses together; Unit 2 "History and Ethics Underwater" is taught by Ellen Hsieh. The content tells how marine history and underwater archaeology are applied to each other, leading students to understand important underwater archaeology cases at home and abroad, as well as laws related to the preservation of underwater cultural assets; Unit 3 "The Correct Way to Enter the Underwater Museum" was taught by Tsang Cheng-hwa and Huang Han-zhang. The course was record at the Penghu Underwater Archaeology station to enable students to understand the current working status of the underwater archaeology team. The team went to the S.S. Bokhara wreck site near Gupo Island, and visited the shipwreck monument, so that students could resonate with underwater cultural assets after understanding their historical background. Through easy-to-understand course content, teachers' lively and vivid interactive modes, and on-site visits to the forefront of underwater archaeology, students are able to master the basic concepts of underwater archaeology and underwater cultural assets in a short time.
