This course provides observation methods and analytical frameworks to help students understand modern cities and urban living. We will focus on both "anthropology in the city" and "anthropology of the city," using ethnography and interdisciplinary works to explore everyday life in the city and the forces that shape urban life. The first part of the course discusses how social sciences understand modern urban experiences, the appearance of neighborhood life, the rhythms of urban life, and relationships between people. The second part focuses on urban spaces, understanding the context and logic behind modern urban planning, how space is controlled and used, how state power and global capital shape space, and reflection on modern urban spaces. The third part emphasizes the city as a shared space for citizens and explores how different users negotiate urban space and living.
