Abstract/Objectives
Students enrolled in the course are required to fulfill specific course requirements and learning outcomes. They must read assigned texts prior to class, actively participate in discussions, and lead text readings. Additionally, students are expected to write weekly summaries for ten weeks that address various themes including health inequality, chronic diseases, stigma, medicalization, and the social construction of disease meaning. They should also explore topics like medical professionalism, technology, and health social movements. Finally, a final report is required, which can be in the form of either a research proposal or an experiential study.
Results/Contributions
Students who are taking the course must complete the following course requirements and learning outcomes.
1. Read the assigned texts before class, participate in classroom discussions, and take turns leading the text readings.
2. Write weekly reading summaries for ten weeks, covering themes such as health inequality, chronic diseases and life biographies, stigma, the social construction of disease meaning, medicalization, biomedicalization, medical professionalism, lay expertise, medical technology, medical practice, evidence-based medicine, health indicators, care, medical controversies, health social movements, and the politics of medical knowledge.
3. Write a final report (formats include research proposals or experiential studies).
