Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
ESG is a pressing issue that requires significantly more development both in the private, public and education sector. This course will introduce MBA students to the concept and development of sustainable development and ESG, providing them with the basic knowledge of it and help them explore how it is put in practice by the corporations. The students will be split into groups, select a specific corporation, conduct an ESG case study of the corporation as their final presentation.
Results/Contributions

Following comprehensive discussions, the selected case studies encompass prominent corporations including Taiwan Mobile, Delta Electronics, WIN Semiconductors Corp., Taiwan Cement Corporation, Reiju Construction, Powertech Semiconductor, AU Optronics, United Microelectronics Corporation, and Grape King Bio.

Students will conduct an ESG study of the aforementioned enterprises and present their findings in the final reports. Dr. Lin Shao-Jie, participating in report evaluations, will engage in dialogues regarding the content provided by each team. The disclosure of specific internal information within companies, such as board structure and carbon reduction plans, is of paramount importance, as these elements significantly influence the companies' ESG indices. Students have emphasized the unique features of each enterprise in their reports.

Notably, the most memorable segment of the final reports was Group Four's visit to Hualien to conduct on-site visit. The report discussed the concept of sustainable operation that Taiwan Cement Corporation values in Hualien, conducting its business in a "cement plant, ecological port, power plant" three-in-one manner. This approach allows for energy production, manufacturing, and transportation to occur within the same region, thereby reducing carbon emissions due to transportation. At the same time, the corporation has established seven major carbon reduction strategies and co-initiated the 2050 climate vision with the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Sustainable operation and corporate management are inextricably linked concepts. Beyond bolstering societal awareness of environmental protection, it also fully utilizes the unique characteristics of different enterprises to contribute to the sustainable development of the industry.

Throughout the course, students not only learned about the concept of SDGs 17 but also understood how these concepts are implemented in practice through research and reports, providing significant assistance for their future professional engagements.
