Abstract/Objectives
"Sociology cared about rural society instead of diet in the past. However, with the expansion of globalization in 21th, food production and food distribution have become significant phenomenon that can influence human society. More sociologists turn their attention from Agri-food Production System to diet problems. From agriculture to diet, where could sociology join? What’s the meaning and contribution of education for sustainable development from a sociology point? The course will use the imagination of sociology and researching food issues with students, by the historical, cultural, structural, and critical view. The course will lead classmates to read the related theories and international cases. In addition, we arrange rural fieldwork and practice Low-carb diets. By practicing, they can understand the value and dilemma of agriculture, the reality of growing, and the ideal of farmers. In the end, they will learn how to use sociological imagination considering food, agriculture, environment, society, and the relationship with themselves."
Results/Contributions

By experience and observing during the interactive communication of land and farmer, students will get six ideas:

1. Know the modern Taiwan rural's beauty and sorrow, understanding the connection of food, agriculture, environment, and society(national/international).

2. Understand the feelings of farmers who live in rural, by practical engaging in agricultural management. Then they'll know the hardships and difficulties of this job.

3. By knowing farmers of different genders and ages in the countryside, students could understand farmers' sense of identity with agriculture and the reasons they insist on it.

4. To learn how farmers define their agricultural products and how to market them.

5. Considering the meaning of agriculture in Taiwan, farmers, the value of the countryside, and food.

6. To consider the relationship of themselves, agriculture, farmers, and the countryside.
