Abstract/Objectives
〝S+T+ARTS〞- Creative Oxygen Project for Interdisciplinary Education, Nature, Ecology and Culture. “S” stands for science, “T” means technology, and “ARTS” is a broad sense of humanities and arts. The project is based on science and technology combined with humanities, social services and innovative industries, so in consequence it finally gave rise to STARTS. We take "STEM with A” as the core concept of education. We do not only develop the teaching aids, materials, plans and methods of interdisciplinary creative education but also make the achievements across disciplines that might be artistically beautiful and even could be used to make art in a cross-domain way. We promote creative learning in harmony with nature, cultivate an interdisciplinary spirit to explore ecology, and at the same time gain knowledge from the natural world. In addition, we integrate the creative spirit with the concept of technology and arts as well as provide them to remote regions. We also revitalize local cultural innovation and tourism, strengthen the natural characteristics and ecological value of the countryside. We create and activate the real estate industry. In the first year of the project, we will set up the “STEM with A: Fun and Creativity in School” as a demonstration base in Hsinchu Shakeng Elementary School, which will gradually expand to Dadu Elementary School. Even more elementary schools in Taiwan are going be engaged in the future. Basing on them, we will train more “STEM with A” seed teachers. In the second year, the “STEAM Exploration Hall” is going to be built by the Education Hall in National Tsing Hua University, then it will be gradually extended to the surrounding parks of Shakeng Elementary School and Big Hill North Moon. Afterwards, we finally will establish the “STEAM Air Museum”. In the third year, we are going to promote “Grow Your Lunch and Agriculture Education” in rural elementary schools such as Shakeng Elementary School in Hsinchu Hengshan District and will also promote “STEM Natural Ecotourism with A”.
Results/Contributions

The specific achievements of our project in the first year are listed as follows:

  1. In May, we constructed the “STEM with A: Fun and Creativity in School” demonstration base at Shakeng Elementary School in Hengshan Township, Hsinchu County, including the purchase of digital equipment and space renovation. As an important STEAM innovation teaching promotion base in Hengshan Township, in the future it will be promoted and will provide services to the schools and the people in the neighborhood.
  2. We have completed the research and development achievements of teaching aids, materials, plans and methods. We have also continuously extended and expanded all of them.
  3. We have completed three field service activities:
  • A “STEM with A: Fun and Creativity in School - Fablab Table Workshop” was held in Shakeng Elementary School where all the teachers and students took part in the event. The slogan which expressed the purpose of the workshop was: “To be a maker, you should make your own table first”.
  • The “Cross-domain and Cross-generational Dialogue of Technology and Art x STEM with A” was organized in collaboration with students of the Art College of Tsing Hua University and teachers along with pupils of Shakeng Elementary School. What is more, the members of the USR from Ministry of Education, the headmaster of Taipei Lishan Elementary School, the principals of Education Experimental Elementary School affiliated to National Taipei University as well as the directors and teachers of the Excellent Art Teachers Group also visited the event and observed on site. We got a lot of recognition and praise.
  • We held “Teacher Training Camp of STEM with A” which was participated by the teachers from Shakeng Elementary School and Dadu Elementary School. The contents of training camp matched the international maker innovation trends by sharing knowledge about “STEM with A” innovative education concepts and future practice mode. Besides, we also trained the teachers on how to operate the digital machines and tools.

Within half a year several workshops will be arranged in order to continuously promote the “STEM with an Interdisciplinary Innovation Education” in Hengshan Township.
