NTHU Net-Zero Emissions

A key milestone in National Tsing Hua University's sustainability journey is the goal of becoming a net-zero campus. To achieve this, the university is launching comprehensive initiatives for carbon inventory, net-zero pathway planning, and implementation. As a leading institution in sustainability education and innovation, NTHU recognizes the campus as an important ground for practical action. Guided by the principle of "NTHU Sustainability — Together in Action," we are introducing international expertise in carbon accounting and reduction, strengthening the professional capacity of our faculty and staff, and jointly advancing carbon inventory and reduction efforts. With hands-on experience accumulated over time, colleagues will also have the opportunity to obtain professional certifications and develop new skills aligned with the global net-zero transition.

NTHU has designated 2022 as the baseline year for its carbon inventory and has completed third-party verification to ensure credibility and transparency. A Campus Net Zero Promotion Task Force, convened by a Vice President, has been established. Each unit with a Chief Sustainability Officer assigns a representative to participate in promoting the baseline inventory, long-term reduction planning, and capacity-building programs — preparing participants to become key drivers of the university's net-zero pathway.

Five-Step Net Zero Pathway:

1. Strengthen management mechanisms and lifestyle habits to integrate sustainability into daily campus life.
2. Replace outdated equipment and enhance the efficiency of air conditioning, lighting, and building energy systems.
3. Expand renewable energy adoption and gradually increase the proportion of green electricity.
4. Promote sustainable transportation and behavioral change to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
5. Offset remaining emissions through carbon trading to ensure achievement of net zero.

NTHU has developed two emission scenarios: under the Business-as-Usual (BAU) scenario, emissions will continue to rise with campus expansion. Following the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway, with a 4% annual reduction from the baseline year, the university can reach net zero around 2046 and fully achieve it by 2050. We have also set an interim goal of a 24% cumulative reduction by 2030 (compared with 2022), continuing our steady progress toward the 2050 net-zero target.

NTHU aims not only to serve as a living laboratory for energy and carbon management but also as a national model for sustainable campuses. Through carbon disclosure, energy-saving measures, renewable energy deployment, waste management, green procurement, and sustainable dining initiatives, the university integrates governance and education — empowering students and faculty to learn and practice sustainability in everyday life, and to extend these actions to society and industry for a shared sustainable future.
