Sustainable Development Goals
Abstract/Objectives
"Cultivating Future Atayal Doctors Through STEAM Education in Jianshi, the Music Town" This cross-institutional STEAM project, led by National Tsing Hua University and National Taiwan University’s College of Medicine, aims to support indigenous education in Jianshi. By integrating Atayal Arts into medical STEAM education and incorporating nature-based courses, the initiative fosters culturally responsive learning. Honoring Jianshi’s first doctor, Inoue Inosuke, whose contributions remain commemorated, the project explores opera concerts as an educational strategy. With collaboration from four departments across both universities, it promotes quality education while supporting indigenous community revitalization.
Results/Contributions

"This project consists of three subprograms:"

Medical STEAM Education: Education students run camps and mentor indigenous students for robotics competitions, gaining firsthand experience in local classrooms.

Music Talent Development: Music students and resident artists offer weekly opera classes at Atayal schools, tailoring materials and training musical theater talents.

Atayal Language Preservation: The project documents Jianshi’s intangible heritage in Taiwan’s first Lmuhuw oral tradition book and produces documentary films. The "Gaga on the Tongue" workshop enables Tsing Hua students to experience and study live Atayal chants.
