Abstract/Objectives
The Master's Program in Chinese Language and Culture at NTHU, in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education, hosted the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP). 20 students from U.S. universities participated in the eight-week intensive Chinese course, equivalent to one academic year of study. The program also featured cultural workshops such as seal carving, dough figurines, diabolo, Chinese chess, and fan painting, offering students hands-on experiences with traditional Chinese arts and culture. Faculty and students from the program serve as instructors, teaching assistants, and cultural activity leaders, applying their expertise in real teaching settings while enhancing their instructional and cross-cultural communication skills.
Results/Contributions

The Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP) achieved remarkable results. Over the eight-week, four-hour-per-day intensive Chinese course, students from U.S. universities made significant progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Their learning outcomes were equivalent to one academic year of study in the U.S., with most students advancing by one level on the TOCFL proficiency test. This demonstrated the program’s academic effectiveness and boosted students' confidence and motivation to continue learning Chinese.

In addition to language training, cultural workshops such as seal carving, dough figurines, dragon beard candy, diabolo, Chinese chess, and fan painting allowed students to experience traditional Chinese arts firsthand. These activities enriched their understanding of Chinese culture and successfully integrated language learning with cultural exchange.

Furthermore, students from the Master's Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at NTHU gained valuable teaching practicum experience by assisting in classes and cultural activities. This hands-on practice enhanced their instructional skills and professional development. TISLP not only advanced the language and cultural proficiency of international students but also provided local students with practical teaching opportunities, creating a mutually beneficial learning environment.
