Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract/Objectives

The Perfume Workshop, designed by student Pei-Wen Tsai, was a creative, hands-on activity that integrated culture, sustainability, and experiential learning. Inspired by locally grown fruits with imperfect appearances that are often discarded by the market, the workshop introduced participants to the concept of transforming underutilized resources into cultural and creative products. Drawing on her academic exchange experience at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsai led participants through the fundamentals of fragrance composition, including top, middle, and base notes. Through guided fragrance blending, youth from partner countries were encouraged to explore the relationship between scent, personal memory, and cultural identity, fostering cross-cultural interaction in an engaging and relaxed learning environment.

Results/Contributions (500 words)

The workshop successfully translated sustainability concepts into tangible creative practice, demonstrating how local agricultural resources can be reimagined through cultural innovation. Participants gained hands-on experience in fragrance blending while developing a deeper understanding of food waste issues, resource reuse, and the cultural narratives embedded in scent.

In addition, the activity functioned as an initial market validation for the student’s entrepreneurial concept. Participant feedback on fruit-based fragrances provided valuable insights into consumer preferences and acceptance, informing future product development and business planning. By integrating creativity, sustainability, and international exchange, the workshop enabled youth participants to engage with Taiwan’s local stories through sensory experience, highlighting the potential of youth-led sustainable innovation.
