Tsinghua University has long focused on the ecological environment, water quality, and the development of settlements along the Touqian Creek Basin. On June 5, 2023 (World Environment Day), in collaboration with the Second River Bureau of the Water Resources Agency, Hsinchu City Government, Fubon Life Insurance, and local civic groups, it promoted interdisciplinary cooperation among industry, government, academia, and research, and published the "Touqian Creek Basin Action Declaration," while signing the Touqian Creek Adoption Document, committing to invest resources and dedicate efforts towards creating a sustainable environment.
Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of Tsinghua University, Dai Nianhua, read the "Touqian Creek Basin Action Declaration" during the meeting, expressing hope to utilize strategies such as protecting the environment, improving water quality, expanding participation, and sustainable education to leverage Tsinghua University’s expertise in technology and scientific fields to address water quality pollution caused by chemical waste and garbage dumping in Touqian Creek.
Professor Huang Nengfu, a distinguished professor in the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University, mentioned that to continuously track pollution data on the distribution, quantity, and types of river waste in Touqian Creek, they hope to apply Tsinghua's expertise in AI to resolve the manpower shortage issues faced by environmental protection groups and local governments in river waste monitoring.
Professor Zhou Xiuzhuan, Director of the Institute of Analysis and Environmental Science at Tsinghua University, stated that river waste can cause environmental impacts, such as the accumulation of chemical pollutants in river sediment and contamination of water quality and soil, which should be emphasized and improved.
