Abstract/Objectives
Our team participated in the 2024 New Taipei City Archaeology Festival, organized by the Shisanhang Museum of Archaeology, and launched an educational yet entertaining immersive experience inspired by shipwreck investigations, which attracted many participants. The activity began with a professional guide explaining the basics of underwater archaeology, including the investigation process and the significance of combining diving techniques with historical knowledge. Participants randomly selected one of three historical shipwrecks, and using ship cards and provided hints, filled out record sheets to make preliminary inferences about the ship’s history, including its name, route, purpose, and cause of sinking. Finally, staff provided a detailed explanation to complete the story of each shipwreck, helping participants gain deeper insights into the historical context behind underwater cultural heritage.
Results/Contributions
  • Archaeology Festival:

At the 2024 New Taipei Archaeology Festival, our center hosted an educational and engaging simulation activity titled Shipwreck Investigation and Cultural Exploration. The activity began with a professional guide introducing participants to the basics of underwater archaeology, explaining the procedures and applications in shipwreck investigations, while emphasizing the importance of combining diving skills, keen observation, and historical knowledge.

After gaining a background understanding, participants were randomly assigned one of three historical shipwrecks. Using ship cards and brief descriptions, they gathered relevant information and filled out record sheets to make preliminary inferences about the ship's historical context. By analyzing artifacts and cross-referencing historical documents, they gradually pieced together details such as the ship’s name, route, purpose, and the cause of its sinking. Finally, staff provided an in-depth explanation to complete the historical narrative of each shipwreck.

Through this highly interactive simulation, including record-keeping and artifact analysis, participants experienced the authenticity of underwater archaeological work. They learned basic archaeological reasoning methods and how to observe and interpret artifacts. This activity aimed to help more people appreciate the scientific value of underwater archaeology, spark interest in historical artifacts and cultural heritage preservation, and foster greater public engagement and sense of connection to cultural heritage.

The simulation attracted participants during the event, receiving positive educational outcomes and enthusiastic public feedback. Many attendees expressed that the activity gave them a new perspective on underwater archaeology and deepened their interest in the historical stories behind shipwrecks.
