National Tsing Hua University is planning to establish the "Freshwater and Marine Pollution Prevention Policy" to reduce various types of freshwater and marine pollution, particularly targeting pollution sources from terrestrial activities (such as agricultural discharge, industrial wastewater, and urban waste). This policy aims to minimize the risk of plastic waste, chemical pollutants, and hazardous substances entering rivers and oceans, while promoting sustainable waste management.
Specific Measures:
- Plastic Reduction Initiative: The university is implementing a "Plastic-Free" program to gradually phase out single-use plastic products such as drinking straws, utensils, shopping bags, etc. Restaurants and cafeterias are encouraged to use sustainable dining ware and provide rental services to reduce plastic waste.
- wastewater management: The university mandates that all facilities must be equipped with advanced wastewater treatment systems to ensure that the discharged water quality meets environmental protection standards, thus reducing the risk of sewage entering rivers and oceans.
- Waste Sorting and Recycling: The campus has a comprehensive waste sorting system and collaborates with local waste management agencies to enhance hazardous waste disposal, preventing chemical substances and heavy metals from contaminating rivers and oceans.
- Land Pollution Control: Campus greening projects avoid using harmful pesticides and adopt natural ecological management methods to prevent chemicals from being washed into rivers and oceans by rainwater.
Education and Advocacy:
Plans to hold an annual "Freshwater and Ocean Guardianship Week," featuring workshops, lectures, and cleanup activities focused on reducing pollution, aiming to raise environmental awareness among faculty, students, and the community. Additionally, there are environmental courses aimed at students that emphasize the causes of freshwater and marine pollution and preventive measures, encouraging students to participate in related social practice activities.
Partners:
This policy collaborates with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Water Resources Agency, local governments, and non-governmental environmental organizations to organize river and coastal cleanup activities and share water pollution prevention technology resources, to jointly promote actions to reduce freshwater and marine pollution.
